Creating for Myself Again: New Goals for 2026
As a dance photographer, my work has always revolved around movement. I’m incredibly grateful for the clients who trust me to capture their artistry, their projects, and their careers. Client work has pushed me and helped shape the photographer I am today.
But as 2026 begins, I’ve been thinking a lot about why I first picked up a camera.
Like many creatives, it’s easy to slip into a habit where every shoot has a brief, a deadline, and an end goal defined by someone else. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it’s part of being a professional. Still, somewhere along the way, I realised I was spending far more time creating for others than I was creating for myself.
Making Space for Personal Projects
In 2026, one of my biggest goals is to intentionally make room for personal projects. Work that exists simply to explore ideas, experiment with light and movement, and reconnect with the parts of dance photography that first lit me up creatively.
Personal projects give me permission to slow down and take risks. To follow a concept on my terms.
Growth Beyond the Comfort Zone
Setting new goals isn’t just about doing more; it’s about doing things differently, pushing myself further. In 2026, I want to challenge my habits, revisit ideas I once put on hold, and push beyond what feels comfortable or familiar. That might mean shooting in new environments, working with movement styles I don’t normally photograph, or approaching editing in a more intuitive way.
These goals aren’t about stepping away from client work. They’re about making sure my creative well doesn’t run dry.
Looking Ahead
This year is about balance and creativity. About honouring the professional side of my work while nurturing the personal side that keeps it meaningful.
Let go, 2026!
